Alfredo (Freddy) Gonzalez was born May 23, 1946 in Edinburg, Texas. He attended Lamar Elementary and Edinburg High School, graduating in May of 1965. He is an example of what our country stands for: a model son, a hard worker, a good student, an excellent athlete, and a Military Hero (Marine). He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps after graduating high school and served his country during the Vietnam War. Sergeant Alfredo (Freddy) Gonzalez served two tours of duty in the Vietnam War. He volunteered for his second tour and lost his life in helping to save his fellow Marines. Sergeant Alfredo Gonzalez died a hero in the greatest tradition of our country. On October 31, 1969, Vice-President Spiro Agnew, on behalf of President Richard Nixon, presented to Dolia Gonzalez, mother of Sergeant Alfredo (Freddy) Gonzalez, the highest award for bravery that can be given to an individual in the United States of America - the CONGRESSIONAL MEDAL OF HONOR (posthumously). Many things have been named in his honor including our own school Freddy Gonzalez Elementary.
